I have a current will

A written will that names an executor, beneficiaries, and (if applicable) guardians for minor children. Updated within the last 5 years or after any major life event.

I have a Power of Attorney for Property

Names a trusted person to manage your finances if you become incapacitated (coma, dementia, accident). Separate from the POA for personal care.

I have a Power of Attorney for Personal Care

Names a trusted person to make medical decisions on your behalf when you can't. Different from the financial POA; usually created together.

I've named beneficiaries on my TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, and pension

Direct named beneficiaries on registered accounts (NOT 'estate' — name a person). Quebec uses notarial wills for beneficiary designations differently.

I've named beneficiaries on life insurance policies

Every term life, whole life, and group life policy should have a named primary beneficiary AND a contingent beneficiary in case the primary dies first.

I have enough term life insurance

If you have dependents, you need life insurance equal to 10-12x your annual income (or enough to cover all debts + kids' education + spouse's income replacement).

I have a digital asset plan

A list of online accounts (email, social media, banking, cloud storage, crypto) with instructions for what should happen to each. Stored in a password manager or sealed document.

My spouse/executor knows how to access my password manager

Either they know the master password, or there's a sealed envelope in a safe with the master password and instructions.

I've written a letter of instruction

A plain-language letter to your family explaining account locations, who to call, funeral wishes, and anything else a will doesn't cover. Not legally binding; purely guidance.

I've named guardians for my minor children

Named in your will. Discussed with the prospective guardians beforehand (they have to accept). Usually a close relative or trusted friend.

I have an RESP with a named successor subscriber

The 'successor subscriber' clause lets your spouse continue the RESP without triggering tax if you die. Check your RESP application for this.

I've chosen and informed my executor

Your executor is the person who executes your will. They should be organized, available, and willing — and they should know you've chosen them.
