1. Log in to CRA My Account
~3 min · Todo
This is the only portal where you can see your ACTUAL TFSA/RRSP room, not an estimate. Every year you skip it, you're guessing.
Exact click path
- 1.Go to canada.ca/cra-my-account
- 2.Click 'CRA sign-in services' → 'CRA sign-in'
- 3.Use your banking partner (BMO, TD, RBC, Scotia, etc.) OR a GCKey - whichever is easier
- 4.If it's your first time, you'll need your most recent tax return handy and CRA will mail you a security code (arrives in 5-10 days)
- 5.Bookmark the landing page once you're in
2. Find your exact TFSA contribution room
~2 min · Todo
TFSA over-contribution costs 1% per month on the excess. Estimating your room is the #1 way Canadians accidentally get penalty letters.
Exact click path
- 1.From the My Account home page, click 'RRSP and TFSA' tile
- 2.Select 'Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)'
- 3.Look at the 'TFSA contribution room' number for the current year
- 4.IMPORTANT: this number is typically updated in February/March, so for the first few months of the year it may lag
- 5.Write down the exact number - you'll need it to know how much you can still contribute this year
3. Find your exact RRSP contribution room
~2 min · Todo
The RRSP contribution room number on your Notice of Assessment is the single most valuable tax number in your life - it tells you how much tax-deductible savings you still have available.
Exact click path
- 1.Same 'RRSP and TFSA' tile
- 2.Select 'Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)'
- 3.Look for 'RRSP deduction limit for YYYY'
- 4.Note the 'Unused RRSP contributions' line too - that's money already in your RRSP that hasn't been deducted yet
- 5.The difference between your limit and what you've already claimed is your REMAINING room
4. Download your most recent Notice of Assessment
~2 min · Todo
Your NOA is the official record of what CRA received and what they calculated. Mortgage brokers, landlords, and benefit-verification programs often ask for it. Save a PDF copy every year.
Exact click path
- 1.From the My Account home, click 'Tax returns' tile
- 2.Select the most recent tax year
- 3.Click 'View return status' → 'Notice of Assessment' or 'Proof of Income'
- 4.Use your browser's print dialog → 'Save as PDF'
- 5.Store the PDF somewhere safe (password manager, encrypted drive, or just a well-backed-up folder)
5. Set up direct deposit for refunds + benefits
~3 min · Todo
Direct deposit means CRA refunds land in your account in 2 weeks instead of 6 weeks (paper cheque). GST credit, CCB, carbon rebate - all arrive on time, all year, without you thinking about it.
Exact click path
- 1.From My Account home, click 'Profile'
- 2.Select 'Direct deposit'
- 3.Enter your bank's transit number (5 digits), institution number (3 digits), and account number (7-12 digits)
- 4.Find these on a cheque, or in your bank's online banking under 'Account info' or 'Direct deposit form'
- 5.Confirm. Future refunds and benefit payments go directly to that account
